Spring Axle Buying Options
Knowing the parts of a trailer axle, the different spring axle options and your axle measurements will help you choose the right fit for your utility trailer.

Optional Trailer Axle Installation Kits
Our spring axles include an axle beam and can be configured with leaf spring, hanger and attaching parts kits.

Spring Kits
Lippert leaf spring kits come with leaf springs and U-bolts, but not the hardware to mount the springs onto the trailer frame.

Attaching Parts (AP) Kits
Our AP suspension kits help you bolt the axle leaf springs to your hangers.

Hanger Kits
A hanger kit is used to mount the leaf springs on the trailer, but it doesn't include the attaching parts.

Spring Center & Hubface
The hubface is the distance from the outside of one hub to the outside of the hub on the opposite side of the axle. Spring center is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of axle to the center of the spring seat on the other side of the axle.
Bolt Pattern
The number of bolts or lugs per wheel and the diameter of the circle the bolts are arranged in make up a trailer wheel hub bolt pattern. To measure a 5-lug bolt pattern, pick a bolt and measure from the outside of the bolt. Then, skip a bolt and measure to the center of the next bolt. To measure a 4, 6 or 8-lug bolt pattern, measure center to center of two bolts directly across from one another.

Spindle Style
Spindles provide a surface for your wheel bearings and wheel hub to rotate around. A straight axle has a completely straight design, while a drop axle makes the wheel hub higher than the axle tube, allowing the trailer to sit lower to the ground.

Spring Orientation
Overslung and underslung describe the ways in which the trailer leaf springs attach to the axle beam. Overslung leaf springs sit on top, or “over” the axle, while underslung leaf springs sit beneath, or “under” the axle. Trailer height, clearance from the axle to the frame and driving stability are all affected by overslung versus underslung leaf springs.

Hub Style
A brake hub allows for electric, hydraulic drum or disc brakes, while an idler hub has no provision for a trailer braking system.
Weight Capacity
Knowing your trailer weight capacity helps you understand your towing limitations. We build a full line of reliable 2-12K spring axles to meet unique specifications for a wide range of utility trailers, including open and closed cargo, teardrop and travel trailers. Our dependable 2-7K torsion axles are ideal for cargo, marine, agricultural, equestrian and purpose-built trailers.
More Benefits of Lippert Axles
Ideal for various utility trailer configurations, Lippert axles include a wide range of premium features that set them apart from the competition.

Exceptional Quality
Our spring and torsion axles are QAI-certified to CSA Standard CAN3-D313-M85 for exceptional quality.

Durable Finish
The powder-coated axle tube finish prevents premature corrosion from road salt and other chemicals.

Robotic Welding
We utilize robotic welding for consistent, fully penetrated welds every time.

Magnet-amp Checked
Each axle is magnet-amp checked for proper function in all wiring.

Brake Options
We offer standard electric, forward self-adjusting and hydraulic brakes for your replacement axle.

The Advantages of Super Lube
Standard on all Lippert axles up to an 8,000-lb. capacity, our Super Lube system makes changing grease easier and cleaner. This time-saving lubricant requires no disassembly of wheels or hubs and fills the entire bearing cavity with grease, allowing for complete submersion. Pumping new grease through zerk purges old grease for a complete repack and offers better long-term protection over standard hubs.

FAQs About Lippert Axles
What are Lippert axles?
Lippert axles are high-quality axles used in various types of trailers, including travel trailers, 5th wheel RVs, utility trailers, and equestrian trailers. They are known for their durability and advanced features, such as machine-processed camber, robotic welds, and Super Lube lubrication.
How do I identify Lippert axles?
Lippert axles can be identified by checking the tag, usually located on the axle beam. The tag includes important information such as the axle’s serial number, capacity, and other specifications.
How do I tell what axle I have?
To determine what axle you have, look for the axle tag on the axle beam. This tag will provide details such as the manufacturer, serial number, and weight capacity. If the tag is missing or unreadable, you may need to measure the axle and compare it to the specifications provided by the manufacturer.
How do I measure a Lippert axle?
To measure a Lippert axle, you need to measure the hub face (the distance between the wheel mounting surfaces) and the spring center (the distance between the centers of the spring seats). These measurements will help you determine the correct axle size for your trailer. For more information about how to measure your trailer axle and select the right size, please see our “How to Select the Right Trailer Axle” blog post.
What are the different types of camper axles?
There are several types of camper axles, including:
Spring axles: These use leaf springs to absorb shocks and provide a smooth ride.
Torsion axles: These use a torsion bar system for suspension, offering a smoother and quieter ride.
Independent suspension axles: These provide individual suspension for each wheel, improving ride quality and handling.
Do trailer axles wear out?
Yes, trailer axles can wear out over time due to factors like heavy loads, rough terrain, and lack of maintenance. Regular inspections and maintenance can help extend the lifespan of your axles.
Can I upgrade my trailer axles?
Yes, you can upgrade your trailer axles. Upgrading may involve increasing the weight capacity, switching to a different type of suspension, or adding features like self-adjusting brakes. It’s important to consult with a professional to ensure compatibility and safety.
How do I replace a trailer axle?
You can replace individual components on an existing axle assembly or replace the entire assembly. Our “Complete Guide to Replacing a Trailer Axle” will walk you through the 12-step process of replacing the assembly.
How do I grease my trailer axle?
Lubricating the Super Lube axle hub on your RV or trailer keeps your wheels spinning freely. It’s a process that should be completed about every 36,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. The process is easy, and all you need are some trailer jacks, a grease gun, and the appropriate grease for your axle. Follow our 7-step process for greasing a trailer axle to learn more.
