When it comes to RV ownership, understanding the intricate workings of your RV’s components is key to ensuring smooth and trouble-free travels. One such component that often goes unnoticed but plays a crucial role in maintaining a dry and comfortable interior is the RV window weep hole.

In this blog post, we’ll talk about what RV window weep holes are, why they exist and how they work, as well best practices for maintaining your window weeps holes.

What Are RV Window Weep Holes?

RV window weep holes are small openings strategically integrated into the design of ventilating and awning windows commonly found in recreational vehicles. These tiny holes serve as drainage channels, allowing water to escape from the window frame rather than seeping indoors.

Why Do They Exist?

The existence of RV window weep holes may seem perplexing at first glance. After all, why would anyone want to intentionally create openings for water to enter their RV? The answer lies in understanding the principles of water management.

RV windows are subjected to various environmental elements, including rain, condensation and vehicle washes. Without adequate drainage mechanisms, water could accumulate within the window frame, leading to unsightly leaks, water damage and potentially costly repairs.

How Do Weep Holes Work?

RV window weep holes are ingeniously designed to strike a delicate balance between water ingress and egress. During normal weather conditions and routine vehicle maintenance, these weep holes allow small amounts of water to enter, effectively managing moisture buildup inside the window frame.

However, when faced with heavy rainfall or high-pressure water flows, the weep holes serve as emergency exits, channeling excess water away from the interior of the RV. By providing a path of least resistance for water drainage, weep holes help to safeguard the structural integrity of the window and prevent water-related issues.

Maintenance Tips for RV Window Weep Holes

Like any other component of your RV, proper maintenance is essential to ensure the optimal performance of window weep holes. Here are some tips to keep them in top condition:

1. Regular Inspection

Periodically inspect your RV windows to ensure that the weep holes are clear of debris and obstructions. This can be done visually by examining both the exterior and interior of the window frame.

2. Cleaning

If you notice dirt or debris clogging the weep holes, use a stiff wire or pipe cleaner to gently clear them out. Be thorough in your cleaning efforts to ensure unimpeded water flow.

3. Sealing

Check the silicone sealant around the weep holes to ensure they are properly sealed. Over time, the sealant may degrade or wear away, compromising the effectiveness of the weep holes. Reapply silicone sealant as needed to maintain a watertight seal.

4. Plugging

While primary weep holes on the exterior of the window frame should remain open, secondary weep holes located inside the frame may benefit from being sealed with silicone. This prevents water from entering the RV through these secondary openings.

By incorporating these maintenance practices into your routine RV care regimen, you can ensure that your window weep holes remain in optimal condition, ready to tackle whatever the elements throw their way.

How to Rain Test Your RV Windows

You can also conduct a window rain test, following the step-by-step process below. You'll need two people to test your windows properly.

  1. Make sure window is dry.
  2. Have one person stand inside the unit to watch for any water intrusion.
  3. Stand 5 to 10 feet away and spray the window from above with a nozzle set to gentle shower or rain so the water covers the entire window.
  4. Continue spraying the window for about two minutes.

NOTE: Water between the panes, exiting the weep holes is NOT a defect. Weep holes are designed for that purpose.
