Can You Add Auto Leveling to an RV?

Share article

There’s no feeling quite like spending a strenuous hour or so leveling your RV with manual jacks, stabilizers, chocks and wedges — only to watch the RV owners at the site next to you mosey in and level their rig with just the push of a button. Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. We’ve all been there. And if you’re looking for a way to be the less frustrated RV owner in this situation, we’ve got good news. Whether you own a 5th wheel, travel trailer or motorhome, chances are you CAN add an RV auto-leveling system to your rig — here’s how:

5th Wheel Auto Leveling Systems

If you’re a 5th wheel owner looking to enhance your next camping adventure with the addition of a power leveling system, you’re in luck. An automatic leveling system can be added on to the majority of 5ers on the road today. Typically available in 4-point or 6-point assemblies, aftermarket automatic leveling kits generally come with all the equipment you need for installation on your rig. The downfall? Unless you’re a tech-savvy RV owner, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to need help from an RV dealer or shop to get one of these kits installed. Here are a few options for add-on RV auto-leveling systems that you can install on your rig.

Ground Control® 3.0

This automatic, electric leveling system is designed specifically for 5th wheel RVs and comes equipped with auto-leveling functionality and auto-hitch memory functionality that stores your camper’s position when you unhook from your tow vehicle — allowing it to automatically return to that position when you're ready to hitch back up again.

Level Up®

Using hydraulics instead of electricity this system is commonly added to 5th wheels at the OEM stage before they hit the market, but it can also be purchased as an aftermarket product at the dealer level. This is a 6-point, patented leveling system engineered to alleviate stress on your RV’s chassis during leveling — helping to prevent damage and ensure stability at all times.

Travel Trailer Auto Leveling Systems

Travel trailer owners rejoice — there are auto leveling systems on the market designed for you too. In a fraction of the time it would normally take you to manually level your system, your trailer can be set up and ready to go, and you can have more time doing all of the things you love while you’re camping. Similar to the previously discussed leveling kits, you’re probably going to need a dealer or shop to perform an installation on your travel trailer, unless you’re superiorly mechanically inclined. And just like our 5th wheel systems, Ground Control makes an aftermarket kit designed just for travel trailers.

Ground Control® TT

With a Maximum Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,000 lbs., this electric, RV auto-leveling system can be added to most travel trailers for a swift, quick campsite setup. Using the same Hall Effect technology as the 3.0 kit, this system measures jack revolutions instead of amps for more accurate leveling and stabilization, and it comes equipped with a Lippert Power Tongue Jack. It also features auto-leveling and auto-hitch functionalities and is compatible with OneControl® technology.

Motorhome Automatic Leveling Systems

And last but not least, let’s talk motorhomes. The good news is a lot of Class A to Class C motorhomes come equipped with an automatic leveling system at purchase. So, if you’re riding around in one of these RVs, you’re probably already operating with an electric or hydraulic system of sorts. Congratulations. But if you’re not leveling your RV with the push of a button yet, there’s still hope! Although slightly more difficult to install than other systems, you can upgrade most motorhomes with an aftermarket automatic leveling kit, just like you can other RVs.

Power Gear

Made specifically for Class A to Class C motorhomes, the Power Gear hydraulic leveling system uses a 4-point configuration to level your RV. This system is equipped with the same one-touch leveling operation as other RV systems — saving you time setting up shop once you’ve arrived at your destination. As mentioned earlier, you’re probably going to want to spare yourself the frustration and hassle of attempting to install one of these kits on your own, and simply take your motorhome into a dealer. In the end, it’s going to be worth it once you’re able to level your RV in minutes!
