How to Measure for an RV Slide-Out Awning

When measuring your RV for a replacement slide topper awning, simply measure between the outside edges of both slide-out room flanges. When placing an order, the fabric measurement should correspond to the flange-to-flange measurement (note: the fabric itself will measure 5” shorter than the complete awning width). For example: A flange-to-flange slide-out size of 64” (or 5’3”) will require an awning width selection of 6’ (5’7” fabric) for complete coverage. Also, you can place your slide-out topper up to 5” above the trim on top of your slide-out room, giving you more flexibility during installation.
How to Install an RV Slide-Out Awning
The below video shows how to install a Solera 5000 Series camper slide-out awning and covers the tools needed for the installation, including a drill, drill bits, a screwdriver, hex wrenches, a tape measure, silicone sealant and lubricant. A second person to help with the installation is also recommended.
Some of the steps involved in installing the Solera 5000 awning include:
- Mounting the awning rail
- Assembling the extension rod and cap
- Installing the access plate
- Installing the slide topper assembly with fabric
- Mounting the access bracket cover

How to Replace Slide-Out Awning Fabric
In the below video, we'll walk you through the process of replacing the existing RV slide-out topper fabric on your rig. Tools needed for the job include step ladders, a drill with appropriate bits, a Phillips head screwdriver, hex wrenches, silicone lubricant, a straight edge or square, a tape measure, a non-permanent marker, a metal file, masking tape, scissors, a rubber mallet and cotter pins. This process will also require at least one other person to help with replacement.
Some of the steps involved in slide topper awning fabric replacement are:
- Extending the slide-out
- Removing the screws that hold the fabric in place on the awning rail and the screws that secure the spring head assembly torsion arm to the hex extension rod
- Removing the end cap from each side of the awning
- Releasing the awning roll tube assembly
- Unrolling the old fabric and sliding it off the roll tube
- Threading the new fabric into the awning roll tube
- Rolling the new fabric back up
- Re-installing the slide-out awning onto your unit and securing it
