1. Can I add a SureStep ladder to my pontoon boat?
Yes, SureStep is designed as an aftermarket upgrade for most existing pontoon and tritoon decks, including boats that may have an existing ladder. Many installs can reuse an existing stern mounting area. The standard SureStep is designed for most pontoons that already have a clear, dedicated ladder space. For pontoons that don't have this space or if the space is limited, the SureStep Free-Fit provides a more flexible mount to avoid obstruction with ski-tow bars, trim, or other hardware that might be in the way.
2. Will the Lippert SureStep ladder fit my pontoon gate or swim platform?
It fits most rear gates and stern platforms if the deck can support the mounting footprint — not every side gate. Standard SureStep needs a minimum 16.19" straight mounting edge, 15.75" of clear deck depth, and 22.8" of overall handrail clearance. Free-Fit uses separate handrails and a wraparound receiver for decks up to 3.25" thick, so it can work around obstacles the standard, one-piece, fixed-mount model cannot. Measure before you order; the ladder may align with existing holes, but keep in mind that hole patterns vary by boat.
3. Can I install SureStep on the front or side of the boat, or only at the rear?
SureStep is built for stern-mount / flush-mount installation at the rear boarding area of the pontoon. It is not designed to be a hook-on side-gate or bow ladder. SureStep can also be installed on a dock when the mounting surface and structure meet the space requirements. Front and side fitment on any boat can vary, as well as fitment on a dock; confirm structure and clearance before purchasing.
4. How hard is it to install a SureStep pontoon boat ladder?
Most DIY pontoon owners can install SureStep with basic tools. The ladder assembly is included, but installation hardware is not. Use marine-grade fasteners, seal every hole, and back the deck so planks cannot pull up under load. Free-Fit takes a little more layout time because the handrails mount independently. Lippert’s pontoon ladder installation guide walks through location, drilling, sealing, and a post-install function check.
5. What comes in the box?
Standard SureStep includes the ladder assembly only. Free-Fit includes two independent handrails, the C-channel bracket, the stair assembly, and assembly hardware. Neither kit includes the fasteners that attach the ladder to the boat or dock, or the tools to install it.
6. What hardware should I use to install SureStep?
The required length and quantity of each fastener will depend on the specific details of the deck’s construction. All fasteners should be 304 or 316 stainless steel. If the mounting location is through an aluminum frame cross member, use self-tapping screws. If the mounting location is through wood and / or thin aluminum and is accessible, use bolts, nuts, and washers. If the mounting location is through wood but cannot be accessed to install a nut and washer, or the mounting location is very close to a cross member, preventing a nut and washer from being installed, use wood screws. No more than two wood screws can be used for each handle plate.
7. What is the difference between SureStep (flip-up) and a telescoping pontoon ladder?
SureStep is a flip-up, staircase-style ladder: five extra-wide angled steps, a 42" reach below the deck, and a standing retraction strap. Telescoping ladders collapse into a smaller under-platform package, but they usually have narrower rungs, a more vertical climb, and tubes that can stick if they sit in the water. SureStep is built to feel like stairs and to stow without kneeling.
8. Is the SureStep ladder good for older or elderly boaters?
Yes and, in fact, SureStep was especially designed with elderly passengers and children in mind — anyone who might struggle to board the boat from the water. The angled five-step design, 15.875" extra-wide slip-resistant treads, extended top step, and supportive handrails are meant to reduce the knee-to-chin pull-up common on short OEM ladders. No. SureStep is a permanently mounted flip-up ladder, not a removable gunwale-hook ladder.
