Maintaining your RV’s suspension system is crucial for a smooth and safe journey. One essential aspect of this maintenance is ensuring all suspension hardware is tightened to the correct torque specifications. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process.

  1. Tools You’ll Need
  2. Step-by-Step Procedure
  3. Final Tips

Tools You’ll Need

  • Torque wrench
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Socket set (including a 13/16" socket and a 3/4" socket)
  • Pair of gloves for hand protection

Step-by-Step Procedure

1. Preparation:

  • Start by gathering your tools and putting on gloves to protect your hands from rust and debris.

2. Inspect the Hardware:

  • Check all suspension components for any signs of looseness, wear, or damage. Pay close attention to the shoulder bolts, shackles, hangers, and leaf springs.

3. Tighten the Shoulder Bolts:

  • Locate the shoulder bolts that connect the double-eye leaf spring to the frame hanger.
  • Set your torque wrench to the manufacturer’s recommended specification, typically between 30 and 50 foot-pounds.
  • Use the adjustable wrench on the other side of the bolt to hold it in place while you tighten.
  • Insert the 13/16" socket into the torque wrench and tighten the shoulder bolts. Listen for the click that indicates the correct leaf spring torque spec has been reached.

4. Tighten the Shackle Bolts:

  • Next, move to the shoulder bolts on the shackle at the other end of the leaf spring.
  • Repeat the process: hold with the adjustable wrench, tighten with the torque wrench set to the correct specifications.

5. Check All Hangers & Shackles:

  • Ensure all other shoulder bolts across each hanger and shackle are tightened to the same specifications. This is especially important if you have multiple leaf springs installed.

6. Torsion Axles:

  • For torsion axles, check the bolts holding the brackets in place. Always refer to your owner's manual for the specific torque requirements.

7. Tighten the U-Bolts:

  • The U-bolts, which hold the axle in place, need to be tightened annually.
  • Set your torque wrench to the recommended specification, between 35 and 90 foot-pounds depending on the weight rating of your suspension system.
  • Using a 3/4" socket, tighten the U-bolts in a clockwise direction.

  • Always double-check the manufacturer's manual or your owner's manual for the correct torque specifications specific to your RV model.
  • Regularly inspect and maintain your suspension system to prevent issues on the road.

By following these steps, you can ensure your RV's suspension system is properly maintained, enhancing your safety and peace of mind during your travels.
