It doesn’t matter if you're towing a utility trailer or an RV, we strive to make products that make towing safer. Whether you're driving in slippery road conditions or on a beautiful day, keeping whatever you are hauling under control is imperative, and Lippert has your back. We are constantly researching new and innovative technology to make sure you can enjoy your ride without all the worries. The latest in our line of towing safety products, the Lippert trailer ABS anti-lock braking system is a ground-breaking initiative that offers confidence to any driver towing a travel trailer, 5th wheel or utility trailer while facing less-than-perfect environmental conditions.

Developed to Create an Industry-First Safety Solution

The Lippert anti-lock braking system (ABS) works with your trailer’s brakes to prevent wheel lock-up and enhance control over the vehicle-trailer combination, particularly in slippery or abrupt braking situations. When you encounter an emergency braking situation while towing your trailer, instead of the trailer fishtailing off to one side and pulling the vehicle into a dangerous drift, the Lippert RV ABS system helps the driver maintain traction and control, bringing the vehicle and trailer safely to a stop.

Anti-lock brakes are standard on most, if not all new passenger vehicles. Why is it not standard on all trailers? We answered this question with a solution. Through our innovative team of product designers and engineers, we developed this product with the goal of making this a new industry standard. Safety is always a top priority when it comes to our products. Talk to your RV dealer to find out if Lippert ABS is included on your rig or, if you're buying a new utility trailer with electric brakes, why not talk to them as well?

Designed to Let You Haul Safer & Smarter Than Ever

The Lippert trailer ABS is prepped to work with the OneControl™ app, so it can be paired with your smart phone to monitor speed, status and more. The system also operates independently from the vehicle’s brake controller. Whether a brake controller is installed or not – and whether it’s a factory controller or aftermarket – Lippert trailer ABS will function to keep the trailer wheels from locking up, and the non-intrusive system also will not interfere with the controller’s gain settings.

Frequently Asked Questions about Trailer ABS

With a new product entering the RV market, such as an anti-lock braking system specific to RVs and towable trailers, there are often many questions. Here are some common questions along with their answers.

  1. What is ABS on a RV?

An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is a safety feature commonly found in many vehicles, including several types of RVs (Recreational Vehicles). The main purpose of ABS is to prevent the wheels from locking up during braking, which helps to maintain steering control and reduces the risk of skidding, particularly on slippery surfaces. In an RV, ABS is especially crucial due to the vehicle's size and weight. It helps to ensure that you can stop safely and maintain control, even in emergency braking situations.

  2. Is ABS on RVs a good thing?

ABS on RVs is definitely a good thing! It is a valuable safety feature that can make driving an RV safer and more manageable. Here are a few reasons why. ABS helps prevent the wheels from locking up during hard braking, which can reduce the risk of skidding and help maintain control of the vehicle. With ABS, you can still steer the RV while braking, which is crucial for avoiding obstacles and navigating safely in emergency situations. Especially on slippery or uneven surfaces, ABS can help keep the RV stable and prevent it from sliding or fishtailing. In many conditions, ABS can help reduce the stopping distance, which is particularly important for large and heavy vehicles like RVs.

  3. Can you add ABS to an RV?

RV ABS is a new feature in the RV market, primarily available in new RV models from manufacturers like Grand Design, Forest River, and Keystone. While it's possible to add ABS to an RV that didn't come with it, it's a complex and costly task. Here are a few things to consider. We can't emphasize this enough. Adding ABS to an RV requires professional installation by a qualified mechanic or technician experienced with ABS systems. Not all RVs can accommodate ABS retrofitting. Check if your RV's braking system can be upgraded to include ABS. The cost of adding ABS can be significant, including the price of ABS components and installation labor. Despite the cost and complexity, having ABS can substantially improve safety, especially for larger and heavier RVs. If you're thinking about this upgrade, it's best to consult with a professional mechanic or RV specialist for a detailed assessment and cost estimate based on your RV's make and model.

  4. Why is my ABS light on in my RV?

If your ABS light is on in your RV, it indicates that there might be an issue with the Anti-lock Braking System. It is crucial to address this issue promptly. Here are the steps you can take. Ensure that the brake fluid is at the proper level. Inspect the wheel speed sensors. Look for any dirt or damage around the sensors. Consult a professional. If you are unable to identify the issue, it is of the utmost importance that you take your RV to a qualified mechanic who can diagnose and fix the problem. If you have a Lippert ABS system on your RV, you can access support documentation and assistance on our support site.

  5. What is trailer ABS?

Trailer ABS (Anti‑Lock Braking System) is a safety system designed to prevent a trailer’s wheels from locking up during hard or emergency braking. By automatically modulating brake pressure, trailer ABS helps maintain traction, steering control, and overall stability.

  6. How does trailer ABS work?

Trailer ABS uses wheel speed sensors and an electronic control unit (ECU) to detect when a wheel is about to lock up. If lockup is detected, the system rapidly adjusts brake pressure to keep the wheels rotating, helping the trailer slow down safely without skidding.

  7. Why is trailer ABS important?

Trailer ABS improves braking performance in emergency situations, especially on wet, icy, or uneven roads. It helps reduce jackknifing, trailer sway, and loss of control — making towing safer for drivers, passengers, and other vehicles on the road.

  8. Does trailer ABS shorten stopping distance?

Trailer ABS doesn’t always reduce stopping distance in every condition, but it significantly improves control and stability during braking. In most real‑world emergency situations, that added control can help drivers stop more safely and avoid obstacles.

  9. Can trailer ABS help prevent jackknifing?

Yes, by preventing wheel lockup and maintaining traction, trailer ABS helps reduce the risk of jackknifing, especially during sudden braking or on slippery surfaces.

  10. Is trailer ABS effective in bad weather?

Absolutely. Trailer ABS is especially beneficial in rain, snow, ice, and gravel conditions, where wheel lockup is more likely. The system helps maintain traction and braking control when road conditions are less predictable.

  11. What types of trailers can use trailer ABS?

Trailer ABS can be used on towable RVs, utility trailers, cargo trailers, equipment trailers, commercial and industrial trailers. It’s designed for trailers equipped with electric or electric‑over‑hydraulic braking systems, depending on the specific ABS configuration.

  12. Can trailer ABS be added to an existing trailer?

In many cases, yes. Trailer ABS can often be retrofitted, depending on the trailer’s braking system, axle configuration, and electrical setup. A qualified installer can help determine compatibility and proper installation.

  13. Does trailer ABS work with electric trailer brakes?

Yes, trailer ABS systems are designed to integrate with compatible electric or electric‑over‑hydraulic brake systems, allowing them to regulate brake pressure electronically when needed.

  14. Does trailer ABS require special maintenance?

Trailer ABS systems are designed to be low maintenance. Routine trailer inspections — such as checking wiring, sensors, and brake components — help ensure proper operation. Any warning lights or fault codes should be addressed promptly.

  15. What happens if trailer ABS stops working?

If trailer ABS is not functioning, the trailer’s brakes typically still operate normally, but without the anti‑lock protection. This means braking control may be reduced during emergency stops or slippery conditions.

  16. Is trailer ABS worth it?

For many trailer owners, yes. Trailer ABS adds an extra layer of safety that can help prevent accidents, reduce damage, and improve overall towing confidence, especially when hauling heavy loads or driving in challenging conditions.

  17. How is trailer ABS different from truck ABS?

Truck ABS controls braking on the tow vehicle, while trailer ABS specifically manages braking on the trailer itself. The two systems work independently but together improve overall braking performance and safety.

  18. Does trailer ABS work with my tow vehicle?

Trailer ABS is designed to operate independently of the tow vehicle’s ABS system, as long as the trailer is properly connected and powered. Compatibility depends on the trailer’s brake and electrical configuration.
