Your RV door window plays a bigger role in your comfort than you might think. While it brings in beautiful natural light and helps open up your space, it can also be a source of heat, glare, and unwanted exposure. If you’ve ever tried to nap during the day or felt like you were living in a fishbowl at a busy campground, you know exactly what we mean.

In this post, we’ll walk you through why an RV door window upgrade is one of the smartest and easiest improvements you can make, and why the Lippert Thin Shade™ is the go-to solution for RVers who want better light control, privacy, and style.

Why RV Door Windows Are a Double-Edged Sword

RV door windows are great for letting in natural light and making your space feel more open. But they also come with a few common drawbacks:

  • Heat Gain: Sunlight streaming through the window can raise the interior temperature, making your AC unit work harder.
  • Lack of Privacy: Standard RV door windows often have no built-in shade, leaving your living space exposed to neighbors and passersby.
  • Too Much Light: Whether you're trying to nap, watch a movie, or sleep in, too much light can be a nuisance.
  • Makeshift Fixes: Many RVers resort to suction-cup shades, towels, or DIY curtains — none of which look great or work well long-term.

If any of this sounds familiar, it might be time to consider a door window shade upgrade.

The Best RV Door Window Upgrade: Lippert Thin Shade™

When it comes to upgrading your RV door window, the Lippert Thin Shade stands out as a smart, stylish, and functional solution. Unlike temporary fixes like suction-cup blinds or makeshift curtains, the Thin Shade is a fully integrated window shade system that’s designed specifically for RV entry doors. It offers a seamless blend of form and function, giving you the privacy and light control you need, without compromising the look of your RV interior.

Why RVers Love the Thin Shade:

  • Blocks harsh sunlight and UV rays
  • Improves privacy at the push of a finger
  • Reduces interior heat buildup
  • No dangling cords or bulky curtains
  • Clean, integrated look that matches your RV’s aesthetic

The Thin Shade is designed to integrate into the window frame itself, allowing you to easily slide the shade up or down depending on your needs. Want to enjoy the morning sun with your coffee? Slide it open. Need a little darkness for an afternoon nap or movie? Slide it closed. It’s that simple. And because it’s built into the door, there are no cords, Velcro, or bulky hardware to deal with — just a clean, modern look that feels like it came standard with your RV.

One of the biggest advantages of the Thin Shade is its ability to block harsh sunlight and damaging UV rays. This not only helps protect your furniture and flooring from fading, but also keeps your RV cooler on hot days, reducing the strain on your air conditioning system. It’s a small change that can make a big difference in your overall comfort, especially if you travel in warmer climates or camp in full sun.

Privacy is another major win. Whether you're parked at a busy campground or boondocking in the desert, the Thin Shade gives you instant control over who can see inside your RV. No more feeling like you're on display or scrambling to hang up a towel when the sun goes down. With the Thin Shade, privacy is always just a slide away.

And let’s not forget about aesthetics. The Thin Shade is designed to complement the look of your RV, not clash with it. Its low-profile design blends in beautifully with your RV door, giving you a polished, professional finish that elevates your space.

Which Thin Shade Is Right for You?

Lippert offers two Thin Shade options depending on your RV door setup:

1. Thin Shade™ Window Kit

  • Perfect for RVs that don’t already have a window or shade installed
  • Includes a full frame with a built-in Thin Shade
  • Easy DIY installation with minimal tools
  • Compatible with Lippert entry doors only

2. Thin Shade™ Add-On for Prepped Door

Installation Is Easier Than You Think

Whether you're installing the complete kit or the add-on version, the Thin Shade is designed with DIYers in mind. Most RVers can complete the upgrade in under 30 minutes using basic tools — or no tools at all for prepped doors.

What You’ll Need:

  1. A second person to assist
  2. Phillips screwdriver (if removing a screw-in window)

Thin Shade Installation Video:

Step 1: Remove the Old Window

If your current window is held in with screws, remove the screws from the inside frame. Have your helper hold the glass so it doesn’t fall. Then, take off the inside frame, followed by the outside frame and glass.

If your window snaps in, use the release tools that came with your Thin Shade kit. Slide them into the slots around the inside frame to release the catches. Again, have someone hold the glass while you remove the inside frame, then take off the outside frame and glass.

Step 2: Install the New Window Frame

From outside the RV, hold the new window frame with the glass against the door. Make sure the seal is lined up correctly. While your helper holds it in place, go inside and press the new interior frame into the outer frame until all the clips snap into place.

Step 3: Attach the Thin Shade

Unlatch the small levers at the top and bottom of the window frame. Hold the top rail of the Thin Shade at an angle and slide each end into the corners of the frame. Push it up and latch it into place. Do the same with the bottom rail — angle it in, press down, and latch it.

Step 5: Test It Out

Slide the shade up and down to make sure it works smoothly. And that’s it — you’re done!

A Small Upgrade with Big Impact

Upgrading your RV door window might seem like a small change, but it can have a big impact on your comfort, privacy, and overall RV experience. The Lippert Thin Shade offers a clean, integrated solution that’s easy to install and even easier to love.

Whether you're looking to block out the sun, keep your cool, or just enjoy a little more privacy on the road, the Thin Shade™ is the RV door window upgrade you’ve been waiting for.
